.. to play a Johnny Cash tribute show. Frankie is from West Michigan, where I’m from. At the time he was just our local Keith Urban, but was being looked at by some labels after a showcase in Nashville. I had the whole thing set up and my boss put the kibosh on it at the last minute. He thought it would bring more negative than positive attention to the station. I only wanted to do it as a tribute to ‘The Man In Black.’ But, my boss was afraid people would think we were doing convicted felons a favor, a fair prediction.
In 2011 I contacted another local band, not as ‘Broadway’ from the radio, but as myself. The band was Gunnar & The Grizzly Boys. Gunnar thought the idea was cool, so I put him in touch with the appropriate people hoping to tag along and blog the event. I tried a few times to jump-start the conversation, but each time the date got pushed back and I eventually lost faith.
I’m not giving up. 2018 will be the 50th anniversary of the release. Maybe we’ll shoot for then.
